Apple to host October 23 event, iPad mini expected

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple Inc will host an event on October 23, said a source familiar with the plan, in what is expected to be the unveiling of a smaller iPad to venture into a market staked out well in advance by rivals Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc.

Speculation has swirled for months that Apple was planning a smaller, less expensive version of its popular iPad to take on cheaper competing devices, a move that analysts say may hurt its margins but prevent its arch-rivals from dominating an increasingly important computing segment.

The consumer device giant is gearing up to unveil a new product at a major October 23 event, said the source who declined to be named, days before Microsoft Corp unveils Windows 8 and its new Surface tablet on October 26.

iPads are so awesome…… Gotta love Apple!

Parents Upset Over Lunchtime Palm Scanner

Parents of students at Carroll County schools in Baltimore, Md., say a new policy that scans kids’ palms to pay for their lunches goes too far.

With the PalmSecure system, students hover their hands over an infrared scanner that ID’s them by the unique patterns in their skin and registers a sale, according to a report from the Daily Herald.

The Herald talked to Mike Richmond, who has two children at a Westminster elementary school. He said the scanning started before parents were given the chance to opt-out.

“I didn’t appreciate how they handled it. I’m concerned about it. I know it’s the way of the future, but it’s fingerprinting, it’s palm-printing.”
The district said the goal is to decrease the time it takes to pay for lunches since the children have a limited amount of time to eat their meals.

The controversial system is operating in three Carroll County elementary schools with plans to expand to the whole district within a year. It’s also used in many other schools around the country where there have also been concerns about invasion of privacy as well as the cost of the system. Once implemented, PalmSecure will run the Carroll County district about $300,000.

Wow. Hope the kids don’t get sick from germs.

‘I Love Lucy’ Still delivers for CBS

CBS (CBS +3.27%) is pinning high hopes on a new lineup of shows out this fall, but “I Love Lucy” is still one of the network’s stalwarts.

The company’s CEO, Leslie Moonves, said Thursday that “I love Lucy” still brings the company about $20 million a year in revenue. Cable and local channels broadcast runs of the show.

Is “I Love Lucy” seeing a resurgence more than 60 years after it debuted? This year, the sitcom was voted the best television show of all time in a survey by ABC News and People magazine, beating out “Seinfeld” and “Cheers.”

“I Love Lucy” had a relatively short life, running from 1951 to 1957, but it topped the ratings charts in most of those years. It morphed into a comedy starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Moonves expects CBS to hold its lead as the most popular network. It will have the next Super Bowl, and it is expected to lead in the 18-to-49 demographic that is so important to advertisers, The Los Angeles Times reports.

I Love Lucy is one of the best shows ever! We Love You Lucille Ball♥

‘Innocence of Muslims’ actress sues YouTube, Filmmaker

“Innocence of Muslims” actress Cindy Lee Garcia, who appeared in the amateur film that triggered deadly riots across Africa and the Middle East, has filed a lawsuit against YouTube and the film’s producer, claiming emotional distress, invasion of privacy, false light, fraud and slander, among other charges.

After the “Innocence of Muslims” trailer garnered millions of hits on YouTube, Garcia claims she lost her job, received death threats and is no longer trusted to babysit her grandchildren, according to the complaint she filed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Wednesday and obtained by TheWrap.

Garcia also claimed the film’s producer Nakoula Bassely Nakoula (also known as Sam Bacile) told her that the fledgling project was a “historical Arabian Desert adventure film” — not an anti-Muslim statement — after she responded to his casting call.

The original script was called “Desert Warriors,” she alleges, and the Muslim prophet Mohammed was never mentioned on the set.

When Garcia asked Google, which owns YouTube, to remove the viral, defamatory video, the YouTube team refused, according to the complaint.

Clint Eastwood explains RNC speech on ‘Ellen Show’

“Clint Eastwood popped in on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Tuesday to explain his headline-grabbing speech at the RNC, and to accuse the Republicans of “spending like drunken sailors.”

Discussing his libertarian beliefs — socially liberal, fiscally conservative — with DeGeneres, Eastwood offered, “Libertarian values: That’s where Republicans used to be when they were saving money and everything.”

Shortly later in the interview, Eastwood reasserted his contention, this time including the Democrats in the mix of money-wasters.
In the last few years, both sides have just spent like drunken sailors,” Eastwood told DeGeneres.

As for his speech at the RNC — which raised eyebrows on a bipartisan level when Eastwood harangued at length an empty chair as if Obama was seated in it — the 82-year-old actor/director cracked, “”It was an interesting reaction, actually; the Democrats who were watching thought I was going senile, and the Republicans knew I was.”

Eastwood added, “But I was actually just trying to enjoy myself.””

Gotta love his smile…..♥

Michael Strahan becomes Kelly Ripa’s co-host!

Former football star Michael Strahan joined “Live! With Kelly” as the permanent co-host on Monday, fulfilling a joking prophecy he made to Regis Philbin more than four years ago.

Former New York Giant jogged onto the morning show set and picked up co-host Kelly Ripa in a bear hug, lifting her off her feet. He replaces Philbin, who left last November. Strahan was the survivor in a series of on-air tryouts of potential co-hosts since Philbin left, and his hiring has been an open secret for the past two weeks.

Strahan appeared relaxed and amiable on his first day and drew “ahhhs” from women in the studio audience when he presented Ripa with a dozen red roses.

“It’s so nice to have a co-host literally sweep you off your feet,” Ripa said, “and I know that he can bench press me if he wanted to.”
Ripa played a clip of Strahan’s first appearance on the show in 2008, shortly after the Giants had won the Super Bowl. Philbin asked Strahan what he would want to do after retiring from football, and Strahan said that Philbin’s job looked pretty good.

“I was joking,” Strahan said on Tuesday, “and I’m glad the joke came true.”

Philbin was the original “Live!” host for more than 28 years, with Ripa joining him in 2001. Strahan said Philbin set the benchmark. “I am in awe of him,” he said.

Strahan is one of several new faces in daytime television this fall. Steve Harvey begins a new talk show on Tuesday. Katie Couric, Ricki Lake and Jeff Probst also have new shows starting in the next couple of weeks.

MTV moves up awards show?

MTV has moved up the start of its annual Video Music Awards so its fans won’t have to choose between pop stars and President Barack Obama.

The show is airing Thursday, the night Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for another term as president. But MTV says it’s running the show an hour earlier than it usually does to not conflict with Obama’s speech.

The show will run from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern time. The president is scheduled to speak after 10 p.m.

Yay.
